The next generation of Numento: I'd love your feedback

Numento means a lot to me: it's one of the first programs I ever created. Yet there was talk of abandoning it, or at least no longer improving it, mainly because the development tools it relied on had become too cumbersome and the code too old.

That's no longer the case: I started over from scratch and am working on a new generation, completely rewritten as native apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad and Android. The screenshots in this article come from the Mac and iPad versions, currently in development.

What this new generation brings

  • Your collections synced across your devices, images included: a PC and a laptop, a Mac and a PC, a computer and a phone.
  • Your collection in your pocket, to check a title at a flea market or add a card.
  • An app written specifically for each system, instead of a single program shared by Mac and Windows: a crisp, polished display, smooth browsing even with 20,000 cards, offline use, and whatever your device can do, like the camera on your phone.
  • Import from other apps, such as Bookpedia or Delicious Library, as long as their format is open.

What stays the same

  • Your collections come with you: importing Numento 4 archives is planned from the very first version.
  • On Mac and Windows, without a subscription, your data stays with you.
  • Your Numento 4 license remains valid with no time limit, and the software will continue to receive, at least until the end of 2028, bug fixes, including security fixes, and updates for the latest versions of macOS and Windows.

Two types of license

The new generation will offer two types of license:

  • A license with no time limit, valid on Mac and Windows, like all previous Numento licenses. It does not include syncing.
  • A license with an annual subscription, to use an online service that syncs all your devices and also serves as an online backup. This service has monthly costs, hence the subscription. It also gives you full use on phone and tablet.

Prices have not been set yet.

My questions

  1. On which devices would you like to access your collection?
  2. On your phone, what would you do: browse, add, scan?
  3. If you use another app, which one?
  4. What would make you hesitate to leave Numento 4?

The first version is planned for the end of January.
